12/9/24-Monday-Day 3 “Fish Tacos & Amigos”

12/9/24-Monday-Day 3 “Fish Tacos & Amigos”

Today is a much anticipated day! We were up early again this morning and after coffee and breakfast began taking down camp with excitement while also not looking forward to the drive out to the highway. After 30 minutes of slowly crawling through the desert we finally reach the rickety barbed wire gate separating us from the main highway. Once back on pavement we have about a 2 hour drive on highway 1 (quite a lot of which is very much in disrepair) to reach our mid-day destination of Guerro Negro. As we approach Guerro Negro we go through an agricultural checkpoint situated on the state line of Baja California and Baja California Sur. At the checkpoint a gentleman informs us that it is 20 pesos (1 usd) to pay for the treatment sprayed on the undercarriage of our truck. Oddly enough neither the car in front of us nor the car behind us were required to pay this “fee”. I don’t think we were required to pay said fee either!

Not even the worst of the road conditions!
Welcome to Baja California Sur!

While in Guerro Negro we have a few things to take care of. We need groceries, water, fuel, fish tacos and most importantly to connect with our friends who we will be spending most if not all of the winter with! As we walk out of the grocery store we spot Mark & Michele pulling up in their Four-Wheel Camper followed closely by Josh, Darci, and Hannah in their ATI Overland flatbed truck camper. This reunion has been looked forward to since we separated in January nearly a year ago and it is finally here! We said our hellos and made plans to meet up at Tacos el Muelle once we finished the rest of our chores. Tacos el Muelle has arguably some of the BEST fish tacos on the Baja peninsula and not one of us is disappointed with our meal, even our friends who had clearly already eaten but still managed to find room for a couple of tacos each.

The BEST tacos in baja! I had the fish while Heather opted for shrimp

With our appetites satiated we head out of town for the short drive to Ojo de Libre in hopes of hiding from a massive wind event that seems to be affecting much of the peninsula with the exception of this small pocket. In just a couple of months this place will become quite busy as the Grey Whales move into the adjacent lagoon, but for tonight it appears to be just our three rigs! We spent the evening settling into camp and getting lost in conversation.
