12/11/24-Wednesday-Day 5 “Whales? An Inspection and Pie!”

We spent the morning drinking our coffee and watching what seemed to be at least one whale breeching in the lagoon. Though unfortunately it was entirely too far off of the coast to truly appreciate the scene it was still pretty cool to see the water spouts and the occasional whale surfacing. Hoping to avoid the remaining wind early in the day we all took our time breaking camp and got on the road sometime around noon.

Our first stop was not surprisingly a fish taco stand aptly named “Baja Fish Tacos”. While in my opinion not quite as good as Tacos el Muelle in Guerrero Negro they were still very good and some of the group seemed to even prefer these. We Finished up lunch, filled a couple of garaffons at a purificada and continued towards our destination of Paraiso Missional in San Ignacio.

Just north of San Ignacio sits a pretty standard military checkpoint. These are typically a fairly quick process of a guard asking “where are you coming from and where are you going?” and then waving you through. This year however the guards seem to be a bit more thorough and this checkpoint was especially so. We sat for nearly 15 minutes in line behind Mark and Michele before the guard started inspecting their camper. Soon after, another guard came over to inspect our truck as well and while he was nearly as detailed in his search as the guard looking over Mark and Michele’s truck, he was much more friendly and kept apologizing for the delay. I even received a compliment on my very broken Spanish!

Once through the checkpoint we stopped for fuel and shortly after arrived at our chosen destination for the next 2 evenings, Paraiso Misional in the town of San Ignacio. We set up our camp and just after dark decided to make the short walk to the town square along with Josh, Darci, and Hannah for some ice cream and a piece of date pie! Upon returning from town we each took a much needed shower and turned in for the night.
